VŠE joins the European PRIDE Network, strengthening support for doctoral candidates and the quality of research
The Prague University of Economics and Business (VŠE) has become a member of the European organisation PRIDE Network, which focuses on the development of doctoral education and the support of early career researchers. This step aligns with the university’s long-term strategy to strengthen research quality, internationalisation, and a modern approach to doctoral studies. The membership is also linked to the preparation of the Doctoral Hub, which was established at VŠE at the beginning of this year and will offer systematic support to doctoral candidates across the university.
European inspiration for Czech doctoral education
PRIDE Network brings together universities and experts from across Europe who are dedicated to the development of doctoral education. It provides a platform for sharing good practice, expert workshops, international conferences, and long-term cooperation among universities.
“Czech universities today face increasing demands on the quality of doctoral education. Inspiration from the European environment is therefore crucial,” says Mili Viktorie Markvartová, who works at VŠE as a coordinator for the support of early career researchers. She initiated VŠE’s entry into the PRIDE Network and has long been involved in its expert working groups.
Doctoral candidates as early career researchers, not just students
One of the key approaches of PRIDE Network is viewing doctoral candidates as early career researchers—emerging scientists who are already an active part of the research environment. “Even a change in perspective alone has a major impact. A doctoral candidate is not just a student fulfilling study requirements, but a researcher who is building their professional identity,” Markvartová explains.
This approach is reflected, for example, in the emphasis on a high-quality start to doctoral studies, known as onboarding, which helps new doctoral candidates better orient themselves, engage in research, and receive the necessary support from the very first months. Experience from European universities shows that well-designed support for doctoral candidates has a direct impact on research quality. Better orientation, clear expectations, and accessible support make it easier to progress towards independent scientific work, international collaboration, and publications.
Towards a modern and open doctorate
PRIDE Network also addresses topics such as transferable skills, research ethics, science communication, and the use of artificial intelligence in research practice. Joining PRIDE Network is another step towards ensuring that VŠE offers modern, high-quality, and internationally competitive doctoral education. “I believe that this collaboration will help us further cultivate an environment for young researchers and strengthen the international visibility of VŠE,” Markvartová concludes.
