Requirements for research project proposals
Faculty of Finance and Accounting
The Faculty requires a scientific essay (according to the program to which the applicant is applying) on a selected topic in the field of finance or accounting and financial management of a company, approximately 10 pages in length. Applicants choose from approved dissertation topics in Czech or English for their admission essay. The scientific essay contains an analysis of the relevant topic, i.e., a definition of the problem and the current state of knowledge and knowledge gaps in the given field, an overview of research methods, and relevant domestic and international literature. The submitted scientific essay should also include an idea of the focus, objectives, methodology, and structure of the doctoral dissertation. Applicants are advised to consult the focus of the scientific essay and dissertation with the supervisors of the relevant programs in advance.
Applicants shall also send their CV, list of publications, and scientific essay electronically to the email address of the study officer for research and doctoral studies at the Faculty. Applicants are required to include in their application the name of their proposed future supervisor with whom they have discussed their application for doctoral study. Applicants must also provide the study advisor with an electronic version of their thesis by email before the entrance exam, the date of which will be announced on the faculty website.
Faculty of International Relations
A research project proposal of about five A4 pages in English. The topic must be presented in the theoretical framework of the chosen programme. Students must specify the aim of the dissertation, structure and its benefit for the programme. The list of literature studied in the appropriate topic must be enclosed. The applicants have to consult the focus of the scientific essay and dissertation with senior lecturers or professors teaching in the relevant programme. The professor’s name must be submitted.
Faculty of Business Administration
A research project proposal of approx. 5 pages in the English language. The proposal contains a description of international scientific knowledge concerning the given topic that raises an interesting research question, answer to which would be considered as a contribution. The proposal also contains the aim of the dissertation and proposed methods for its accomplishment. The list of main academic articles from leading international journals that the intended scientific essay is based on must be enclosed. In the application form, the applicants are obliged to fill in the name of a potential thesis supervisor who has confirmed their willingness to supervise the dissertation. This confirmation is an obligatory requirement for taking the entrance examination.
Faculty of Informatics and Statistics
For the programme Applied Informatics: a research project proposal, with length approx. 5 pages in English which conforms to the following structure:
– definition of the field,
– topical theoretical and practical questions related to the chosen field, with the reference to literature (see the next point)
– a list of the relevant literature, including a list of institutions and researchers working in the chosen field if needed,
– the applicant’s own skills in the field (Master’s thesis, publications, practice),
– definition of the thesis’ objectives,
– a concept of methods used in achieving the objectives.
It is necessary to gain a supervisor´s approval of supervision.
For the programmes Econometrics and Operations Research and Statistics: submission of an intended research project proposal (1-2 pages in English).
Faculty of Management
A research project proposal (4-6 A4 pages) in a form of an academic essay should be submitted with the application. The essay should follow the structure of a research article (esp. the first three sections; that is Introduction, Theoretical Background, Data and Methods). The essay should explicitly state the research aim and the expected contribution to the Management field. The list of literature should be also included. The candidate should indicate the name of potential supervisor with whom they have (optimally) consulted the research aim and the dissertation topic.
